Can there be timing pulls without knock detected (real or false)?

As the title states, do we know if the ECU can pull timing without one of the knock sensors actually sending a signal indicating knock (real or false is irrelevant)?

I ask because I know Terry tried to alter the signals but ended up not having much success, but then I wonder.. what other factors could pull timing if not the sensor telling the motor that its knocking?
